How to get involved
Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. By volunteering, you allow us to keep costs down, but that is really just the tip of the iceberg. This hands on support helps us accomplish more, and we have found that our volunteers genuinely enjoy being connected to those in the local community whose lives they are affecting.
Just a few of the ways to help include:
- giving your time to address the needs of the community
- planning and staffing events, activities and programs
- free up funds to agencies and programs by reducing labor costs
- serving on our Board of Directors
- When you volunteer, you’re touching people’s lives directly. When volunteers are asked why they do it, they usually respond that yes, they enjoy doing something for others, but the most compelling reason is that it makes them feel great!
In the world of community service, those who are able to contribute a small amount of their time make a tremendous difference. We understand that there are all types of volunteers, with varying needs and specialties. Our volunteers are the most effective when working directly with a cause or program that inspires them, but luckily, we have over twenty agencies with lots of needs, and all of them are only a phone call away.
With your help, our programs can make the biggest difference in the local community, by insuring that the funds we raise provide direct support to those in need. Instead of having to hire workers to do home repair, help out a senior citizen in need, or mentor a local teen, we are able to utilize volunteers to stretch our funding to its maximum effectiveness.
Our partner agencies are actively seeking volunteers! You can request volunteering information in one click on our agency pages.
About our volunteer of the year
Every organization has at least one volunteer who always is ready, willing and able to help. He or she is the “go-to” person – the volunteer you can always count on, who never turns you away. The person who you could not do without! Our 2010 Volunteer of the Year is that person.
Our 2010 Volunteer of the Year has been in a leadership role at United Way for almost ten years and has many accomplishments. This person led a successful annual fundraising campaign, raising almost $2.6 million, and has served as Board Chair. Our annual Family Fun Day was the idea of this person. This event, now in its 7th year, raises awareness of the wonderful role our agencies play in providing needed programs and provides a carnival event that families with young children can enjoy.
Our Volunteer of the Year lends talents in many other ways. In 2010, she helped United Way bring its bookkeeping in-house saving almost $9000 in annual administrative expenses. This person consolidated United Way’s accounting statements and now provides monthly accounting and financial statement preparation. In addition, United Way’s payroll is now paid electronically and pay stubs are e-mailed. Our Volunteer of the Year has helped make us more effective, efficient, and GREEN!
Our Volunteer of the Year’s commitment does not end here. Oh no, the list of contributions is truly endless. This person currently serves as Corporate Secretary and is a member of the Finance Committee and Board.
A loyal leadership contributor, our Volunteer of the Year always makes sure United Way has what it needs. Our volunteer donated the QuickBooks software we use and has sponsored our de Tocqueville recognition event.
Our 2010 Volunteer of the Year is truly a person who LIVES UNITED. She is a person with boundless generosity and love. Her 2005 campaign slogan was “touching hearts, changing lives” and that is exactly what she does each and every day for United Way and our community. Our 2010 Russ Foret Volunteer of the year recipient is Claudia Adams.
